How do I trim a bird of paradise plant? - sprinkler trimmer

I'm in the Phoenix area, and actually had a bad cold in January, then the plant was not damaged by an irrigation sprinklers. Now it is obviously better, but there are many leaves that are brown on the edges and some are brown. Please help, I bought this house with a beautiful garden, but I am a novice in matters more.
